Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of law enforcement experience involving power of arrest, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have current North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Certification
  • Maintain physical fitness meeting North Carolina law-enforcement certification standards
  • Maintain professional grooming and conduct on and off duty
  • Respond on a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week basis
  • Work a minimum 160-hour work period per month
  • Complete a 24-month probationary period
  • Attend and graduate from the 13-week SBI Special Agent Academy upon hire
  • Successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including polygraph, credit and arrest checks, reference and verification interviews, medical examination, drug screening, and psychological assessment
  • Successfully complete Review Board assessment, modified POPAT, polygraph examination, and firearms assessment
  • Ability to evaluate consequences and make sound decisions promptly
  • Ability to understand and apply laws, statutes, and codes
  • Clear and effective communication via police radio and electronic communication systems
  • Preferred: knowledge of criminal investigation methods, physical evidence, North Carolina criminal laws, firearms, and evidence-collection equipment
  • Preferred: bilingual proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing
