About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assists the National Register Coordinator in the administration of National Register of Historic Places program for the State of North Carolina.
  • Ensuring office compliance with federal code and state statute by fulfilling multiple complex steps of National Register and Study List Program legal notification requirements;
  • Managing National Register and Study List files and databases and coordinating with staff to improve complex workflow and track legally required application review timelines;
  • Facilitating public access to National Register Program information through website updates;
  • Assisting in completing technical review of National Register nominations and minor National Register Additional Documentation projects according to federal and state program guidelines, as requested;
  • Accessioning and cataloging secondary sources and survey reports into historic preservation staff library;
  • Providing logistics and promoting committee attendance for state board meetings required by federal statute for National Register Program;
  • Responding to requests for National Register Program-related information from the public, Historic Preservation Office staff, and National Register and survey consultants, including assessments of property status using GIS-based historic resource survey platform.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the structure and operation of national and state preservation programs
  • Knowledge of history and/or architectural history
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Access, Excel
  • Experience working with others in a collaborative setting and meeting deadlines
  • Must be able to comprehend technical language and concepts.
  • Must have the ability to work with the public with tact and diplomacy.
