About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Review the record of formal administrative hearings conducted pursuant to Chapter 443, Florida Statutes, and exercise independent judgment in determining: whether the hearing was conducted in accordance with the requirements of due process; whether the hearing officer’s findings of fact are supported by legally sufficient evidence; and whether the conclusions of law are in accord with statutory and regulatory provisions of law as interpreted by the Commission, state courts, and federal courts.
Prepare a summary that includes a legal opinion with respect to its disposition and draft a proposed order for the Commission, which will constitute final administrative agency action.
Provide general legal advice and assistance to the Commission; handle telephone inquiries from the public regarding appeals to the Commission; and be called upon to represent the Commission before the Florida district courts of appeal.
Develop legal skills and obtain experience working for a quasi-judicial administrative entity. The Commission provides extensive in-house training and encourages employees to take advantage of FloridaCommerce and USDOL trainings, as well as Florida Bar continuing legal education courses.
