About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Represents the Florida Commission on Human Relations in civil litigation, administrative, and other legal proceedings
  • Prepares legal documents, conducts legal research, and provides advice on legal issues and transactions
  • Determines whether statutory violations occurred in cases investigated by the agency
  • Reviews investigative reports for legal sufficiency
  • Prepares Determinations and other legal documents for review and approval by the Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, and/or Executive Director
  • Works with investigations managers to improve work product and revise investigative reports in accordance with legal criteria
  • Reviews case files and recommended orders from the Division of Administrative Hearings to draft proposed final orders for approval by commissioners
  • Represents the agency in legals proceedings before the Division of Administrative Hearings, First District Court of Appeals and other forums, with close supervision
  • Responds to inquiries from agency staff, parties to complaints and the general public regarding legal issues specific to employment discrimination, retaliation, public accommodations, whistle-blower retaliation, and fair housing
  • Prepares and conducts legal training modules on a variety of subjects related to whistle-blower retaliation and discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations
  • Reviews public records requests

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Admission to The Florida Bar and a member in good standing
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law, or in administrative or judicial hearings
  • A degree in business administration, public administration, or business management (preferred)
  • Experience in employment discrimination law and/or housing discrimination law (preferred)
  • Experience drafting and editing complex documents (preferred)
  • Experience managing a large caseload (preferred)
  • Experience drafting proposed final orders (preferred)
  • Attorney in good standing with the Florida Bar (licensure requirement)
