About the role

  • Provide breastfeeding assessment and counseling under the supervision of the Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor
  • Responsible for training WIC and other health professionals in breastfeeding promotion and management
  • Provides breastfeeding support to WIC clients per local agency requirements
  • Manages the direct care of clients
  • Interviews and assesses breastfeeding mother and baby dyads for successful breastfeeding experiences
  • Provides follow-up for women and their infants regarding feeding and milk supply issues
  • Prepares and teaches classes to promote, protect, and support clients’ breastfeeding decisions
  • Issues breast pumps and other related equipment to WIC clients according to assessments and agency guidelines
  • Document telephone contacts, breastfeeding classes, assessments/consultations, and issuance of breast pumps
  • Updates and maintains breastfeeding inventory
  • Represents WIC at community organizations, meetings, and coalitions to promote breastfeeding and provide outreach.

Requirements

  • Must have one of the following credentials: Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Support Provider (CLSP), Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS), Lactation Educator Counselor (LEC), Military Lactation Counselor (MiLC) or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
  • Must be currently employed by the Florida Department of Health
  • Must have a minimum of one year of experience in providing counseling to breastfeeding women
  • Must be willing to work in various clinic locations and for community outreach in Brevard County
  • This position requires current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Preferred: fluently read, write, and speak both English and Spanish or Creole
  • Preferred: successfully completed a minimum of eight college courses from an accredited institution in Health Sciences.
