About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Evaluate, select, specify, and engineer systems or products for projects including bridges and other transportation structures
  • Work on plans and designs of structural engineering projects such as bridges, highway interchanges, roadway reconstruction, retaining walls, landslide repairs and public spaces
  • Provide resources and schedules in response to specified completion dates and technical applications
  • Prepare proposals and cost estimates and evaluate all project progress and recommend changes, if needed, in final procedures
  • Perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned projects
  • Responsible for the review and sealing of own projects or the work of the others working under your supervision
  • Manage the design and construction of projects, and provide structural engineering input
  • Manage and lead other team members while working on projects
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on structural design elements and projects
  • Prepare construction contract documents, project proposals, change orders, plans and reports
  • Perform calculations using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software
  • Attend client/contractor/stakeholder meetings to gain a better understanding of client’s goals
  • Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Monitor own work and that of project team to ensure budgets and schedules are being met
  • Mentor less experienced team members in day-to-day activities including routine technical design, processing and company procedures
  • Utilize relevant software programs to prepare exhibits and complex working drawings
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Thorough understanding of all phases of project document production
  • Thorough understanding of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions
  • Proficient in Microstation, Open Roads Designer and other relevant design software
  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting, engage in creative and critical thought, and effectively communicate ideas, design issues and solutions to others
  • Ability to create and interpret sketches, drawings, and various structures
  • Familiarity with Ohio Department of Transportation and/or Ohio Turnpike Commission manuals, guidance and project development procedures
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent required, Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred
  • Licenses/Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer in Minnesota or the ability to get a license within 6 months preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of experience is required
