About the role
- Work collaboratively with Stantec offices across Canada, USA, South America and Australia to support local and international mining projects
- Engage technical team in planning, design and execution of geotechnical projects in soils and bedrock
- Lead planning and completion of geotechnical site investigations including instrumentation, logging, sampling, and field testing
- Lead installation, monitoring and interpretation of geotechnical instrumentation data
- Lead analyses and design of complex earth and rock structures
- Support mine and tailings planning groups in development and design of large mining and closure projects
- Lead preparation of technical design documents, drawings, figures and models
- Lead preparation of project technical proposals and provide peer/senior review of technical deliverables
- Collaborate with geology, hydrogeology, water management, environmental/permitting, process design, mining, and pumping/piping disciplines
- Ensure compliance with Stantec and client safety programs and Project Quality Procedures
- Provide technical leadership, business awareness and project/program management understanding
Requirements
- Critical and flexible thinking to provide tailored, practical solutions
- Experience in some or all of core geotechnical areas of expertise (TSF, pitwall, WSF, civil foundations, closure, field investigations, instrumentation)
- Demonstrated ability to lead or mentor a team of engineering professionals
- Understanding of mining operations and mine waste management
- Geotechnical material characterization (particularly mined materials)
- Slope stability, deformation analyses, liquefaction potential, seismic hazard assessments
- Seepage and foundation characteristics of dams/tailing storage facilities
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make timely decisions
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English (written and oral); proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese or French is an asset
- Proven ability to work in a professional team environment with diverse cultures
- Experience in a consulting engineering environment at a senior technical management level
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and CAD systems
- Technical expertise in specialized geotechnical software (e.g. GeoStudio, Rocscience)
- Work experience in mining or resource industries is an asset
- Ability to conduct work in a safe manner with high situational awareness
- Open mind and bias self-awareness to participate in adoption of new technology initiatives
- Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in geotechnical, geological, civil or mining engineering
- 10+ years industry or consulting experience
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and satisfactory Driver's Abstract (per Stantec Safe Driving Policy)
- P.Eng. registered or eligible for registration with Alberta Professional Engineers Geoscientists Association (APEGA) is an asset
- Membership of professional bodies related to geotechnical engineering, tailings/water dams, and international mining is an asset
