About the role
- Participate in evaluation, recommendation, design and specification of Vehicle Fueling Systems (hydrogen, CNG, petroleum and HD EV charging)
- Work on and lead tasks and support larger projects under guidance of the practice area Principal
- Interface with and direct a Mechanical Designer/Drafter to prepare BIM and CAD-based construction drawings for fuel facilities and infrastructure
- Prepare design concepts and markups for process-piping systems and direct Designer in preparation of plans, details, and process-flow schematics
- Lead and mentor fuel-team junior staff
- Lead QC efforts to verify design documents meet project requirements and are free of errors
- Research equipment and materials to fulfil client and project requirements
- Work with architectural, electrical, structural, civil and other design disciplines for coordination of facility designs
- Represent the fuel-design team at interdisciplinary design meetings (virtual and in-person)
- Review submittals against specifications and design drawings
- Perform calculations to analyze and design fueling-infrastructure subsystems using company-standard software and proprietary manufacturer software
- Research and conduct basic interpretations of drawings, codes and regulations
- Lead or participate in field inspections and prepare observation reports and punch lists
- Support the practice-area principal to develop proposals, including writing/editing work-plan narratives and estimating work hours by task and staff
- Perform other duties as assigned by the practice-area Principal and senior staff
Requirements
- California mechanical-PE license and registration with NCEES
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- At least seven years of experience working as a mechanical engineer on the design of fluid-process systems
- Experience designing vehicle-fueling infrastructure across fuel types including hydrogen, compressed natural gas (CNG), petroleum, gasoline, diesel, propane, liquid hydrogen, gaseous hydrogen, and HD EV charging
- Experience with design of gas-compressor systems, including high-speed, high-pressure (4000 PSI+) systems, and associated high-pressure piping and tubing designs
- Experience designing and engineering gasoline & diesel fueling systems, including underground and aboveground tank configurations, dispensers and leak-monitoring systems
- Familiar with Master Format/CSI specification structure for equipment and product specifications
- Strong technical- and report-writing skills, including native-equivalent proficiency in English
- Competent in basic electrical-power design, including preparing preliminary electrical-load schedules and conceptual single-line diagrams for 480V 800-2500A equipment power schemes
- Ability to occasionally prepare or modify drawings in Revit; basic understanding of Revit and BIM360/ACC
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Basic familiarity with PLC-based controllers, actuated valves
- Understanding of engineering mathematics and fluid dynamics
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team settings and engage in creative and critical thought
- Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, building programs and similar material
- Attention to details, adherence to standards and focus on consistency
- Ability to lead and mentor junior staff including project engineers, EITs and designers
- Experience in the oil and gas industry or in fueling-systems design is an advantage
- The ability to commute to downtown Los Angeles at least two days per week is preferred
