About the role
- Managing complex litigation matters, including those involving professional liability claims, general civil litigation, and professional disciplinary proceedings
- Taking primary responsibility for the review, negotiation, internal coordination, and closeout of various professional service and construction agreements. This involves assisting with the drafting, negotiation, and approval of a wide array of complex contracts
- Providing general legal advice, support, and training to business units in relation to operational and ethics-related matters
- Handling routine legal matters as required, such as responding to subpoenas, public records requests, potential claims, and emerging issues
- Providing support in commercial collections and matters related to mergers and acquisitions
- Consulting and providing support to other Stantec lawyers and internal support teams when necessary
- Proactively managing and supervising external counsel and associated budgets to facilitate the above activities
- Serving as the main point of contact and advisor for a broad range of internal constituents across multiple jurisdictions, including project staff, project managers, local business team leaders, and senior leadership
Requirements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a strong ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Experience supporting Design Professionals would be considered an asset for this position
- Substantial experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, including managing complex commercial litigation (such as errors and omissions, professional negligence, and construction defects) and sophisticated contract work, including design/build agreements, joint ventures, and professional services agreements
- Triage and ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple competing demands simultaneously
- Capacity to balance legal and business needs, providing timely and value-added advice to the business
- Above all, the ability to maintain a high standard of respect and integrity, while working alongside peers/colleagues.
- Possession of a Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree, with admission to the bar in the United States
- A minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant experience gained either at a law firm or in-house
- Occasional travel within the United States and Canada is required, requiring a valid passport
- A valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are required.
