Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and manage employer tax account registrations with state and local agencies for unemployment insurance, withholding, and other applicable taxes.
  • Track and ensure timely registration completion and documentation.
  • Research and resolve payroll tax notices in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with state and federal agencies to understand the root cause of discrepancies.
  • Partner with payroll vendors, internal teams, and clients to correct filings or payments.
  • Support and review the accurate completion of Form 941 and other federal filings.
  • Assist with recurring, quarterly and year-end reconciliation of tax filings and deposits.
  • Maintain POA documentation to facilitate agency communication.
  • Ensure POAs are accurate and current with all relevant jurisdictions.
  • Serve as the payroll tax subject matter expert for internal leadership, payroll vendors, and client points of contact.
  • Translate complex tax issues into clear action plans for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Advise clients and internal teams on corrective actions, compliance timelines, and best practices.
  • Act as the primary liaison with payroll vendors for tax-related matters.
  • Coordinate with state and local agencies to resolve registration, filing, and payment issues.
  • Assist manager with standardization and creation on Tax SOPs and automation efforts.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in payroll tax, including multi-state tax environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
  • Experience completing and reviewing Form 941, tax reconciliations, and amendments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and leadership.
  • Proven experience working with payroll systems and third-party payroll vendors.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and tax research tools.
  • FPC or CPP certification preferred.
