About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and manage employer tax account registrations with state and local agencies for unemployment insurance, withholding, and other applicable taxes.
- Track and ensure timely registration completion and documentation.
- Research and resolve payroll tax notices in a timely manner.
- Liaise with state and federal agencies to understand the root cause of discrepancies.
- Partner with payroll vendors, internal teams, and clients to correct filings or payments.
- Support and review the accurate completion of Form 941 and other federal filings.
- Assist with recurring, quarterly and year-end reconciliation of tax filings and deposits.
- Maintain POA documentation to facilitate agency communication.
- Ensure POAs are accurate and current with all relevant jurisdictions.
- Serve as the payroll tax subject matter expert for internal leadership, payroll vendors, and client points of contact.
- Translate complex tax issues into clear action plans for non-technical stakeholders.
- Advise clients and internal teams on corrective actions, compliance timelines, and best practices.
- Act as the primary liaison with payroll vendors for tax-related matters.
- Coordinate with state and local agencies to resolve registration, filing, and payment issues.
- Assist manager with standardization and creation on Tax SOPs and automation efforts.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in payroll tax, including multi-state tax environments.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
- Experience completing and reviewing Form 941, tax reconciliations, and amendments.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and leadership.
- Proven experience working with payroll systems and third-party payroll vendors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and tax research tools.
- FPC or CPP certification preferred.
