About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Participate in an intensive Behavioral Health internship combining seminars with clinical practice
  • Complete supervised hands-on training, simulation, clinical observations, and clinical preceptorship
  • Assess the mental and physical status of assigned patients
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate assessment, treatment, growth and development, and communication competencies
  • Initiate and maintain multidisciplinary treatment plans and revise them according to policy and regulatory standards
  • Assess patient and family learning needs and provide and document psycho-educational interventions through therapeutic programming
  • Apply knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychiatric mental health disorders
  • Respond to agitation or violent behavior using verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint as a Control Team member
  • Care for patients requiring restraints or seclusion
  • Supervise and remain accountable for care provided by Mental Health Technicians and ancillary staff
  • Maintain thorough clinical records and document patient information in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory guidelines
  • Upon successful completion, work in a St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Unit caring for patients across their lifespans

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Nursing students with prospective Spring, Summer, or Winter graduation dates who will be eligible to sit for NCLEX and obtain licensure before the internship starts
  • Experienced RNs who have not worked in a Behavioral Health setting
  • Registered Nurse with a current license to practice in the State of Pennsylvania
  • Maintain current BLS certification
  • Demonstrated competency in patient assessment, treatment, growth and development, and age-appropriate communication
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology
  • Skill in verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint for agitated or violent behavior
  • Competence in caring for patients requiring restraints or seclusion
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including standing up to 8 hours, walking up to 6 hours, lifting up to 75 lbs frequently, and transporting patients up to 250 lbs with assistance
  • Ability to perform required bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, reaching, occasional crawling, and handling/grasping tasks
  • Ability to hear normal conversation and high/low frequencies
  • Ability to see general, near, far, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and visual monotony
