About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Interpret verbal and written physician orders
- Obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages using appropriate collection equipment
- Handle and process laboratory specimens according to SLUHN policies and manuals
- Perform outpatient EKGs as needed
- Operate centrifuge and ensure proper specimen transfer and storage
- Communicate timely with the outpatient lab central scheduler, regional coordinators, and managers
- Travel between sites for unscheduled absences and/or emergencies
- Review and comply with Network and departmental policies and procedures
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Phlebotomy program completion certificate or documented competency through a recognized training program required
- Minimum of 100 successful venipunctures required
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to accurately use Epic or other electronic health record systems, registration tools, kiosk workflows, and laboratory applications
- Strong customer service skills
- Reliable transportation to arrive at assigned work locations as scheduled
- Ability to perform the physical and sensory demands of Patient Service Center operations
- Ability to continuously perform keyboarding and data entry
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds or more on rare occasions
- Ability to operate a car for travel to assigned locations
- Preferred: one year of phlebotomy experience
- Preferred experience with outpatient laboratory workflows, patient service center operations, specimen collection and processing, registration, patient identification, Epic or other electronic health record, registration, or laboratory information systems
