About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist providers with patient examinations, prepare exam rooms, and assist with procedures
- Maintain log books and monitor pharmaceutical sample cabinets for expired items
- Verify and maintain patient medical records, including demographics, insurance, guarantor information, and scanned documents
- Notify patients of normal test results, process lab orders, return calls, and schedule testing, procedures, prescription refills, and referrals
- Administer medications safely and accurately under supervision
- Interview patients, collect clinical information, prepare provider reports, and document information in medical records
- Provide insurance information while maintaining patient confidentiality and releasing records only with appropriate consent
- Obtain and document vital signs, collect and process specimens, and perform phlebotomy when trained and competent
- Clean, stock, and maintain exam rooms; order supplies and prepare instruments for sterilization
- Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patient appointments
- Answer and direct incoming calls, take accurate messages, and route tasks appropriately
- Depending on the ministry, collect and post payments, balance cash drawers, prepare superbills, and update financial and personal information
- Work safely and maintain constant alertness
- Complete coursework, clinical rotations, homework, and on-the-job-learning competencies during the 18-month apprenticeship
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent
- Reside in Wisconsin within a geographic area served by the Workforce Development Board of South-Central Wisconsin (Greater Madison area)
- Reliable transportation to SSM Health clinic locations and Madison College campus
- Willingness to sign and agree to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Apprenticeship Program terms
- Complete the application and screening questionnaire
- Complete Madison College registration and placement test
- Complete three semesters of the Madison College Medical Assistant curriculum
- Complete all coursework and clinical rotations within 18 months, starting with Madison College classes in January 2027
- Maintain a performance rating of 'meets expectations' or higher
- Earn a grade of 'C' or better in all coursework
- Meet all on-the-job-learning competencies
- Expected to register for and pass the Certified Medical Assistant exam upon completion
- Sign an Employment Agreement to work for SSM Health as a Medical Assistant for at least two years after the program
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) certification required within 90 days of employment
- Constant standing and walking; frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, gripping, keyboard use, and data entry
- Ability to occasionally lift or move patients and handle objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Occasional driving may be required
