About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Select manuscripts for publication with appropriate editorial oversight within the journal’s editorial policy
  • Evaluate scientific quality, comprehend research, assess manuscripts and ensure decision quality
  • Make selected manuscripts accessible to a wide readership by improving titles and introductory sections, particularly abstracts
  • Suggest necessary structural changes to authors
  • Ensure accepted manuscripts are transferred to production in an appropriate, complete state
  • Recommend manuscripts to the Chief Editor for journal press releases
  • Write press release drafts
  • Recruit, train, support and engage external editors
  • Ensure external editors understand and implement the journal’s philosophy and policies
  • Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions in agreement with the Chief Editor
  • Report on conference, meeting and institutional-visit activities
  • Advise Advertising and Marketing as required
  • Devise and supply editorial content for special projects agreed with the Chief Editor

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in one or more Earth and environmental sciences disciplines
  • Strong candidates from all areas of Earth and environmental sciences considered; ocean sciences or atmospheric chemistry ideally
  • Editorial experience, postdoctoral experience and broad training are advantageous
  • Passion for science and desire to learn more
  • Breadth of interest in scientific research within and beyond one’s speciality
  • Ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research from different disciplines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken
  • Desire to meet scientists worldwide, online and in person
  • CV including a brief account of research and other relevant experience
  • Brief outline of no more than 300 words on an exciting development in environmental science
  • Brief cover letter explaining interest in the post, preferred location and salary expectations
