About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Project manage the timely launch of new journals, ensuring required Board Member and content thresholds are met
  • Develop proposals for new journal launches in the subject area
  • Develop journal development strategies for each journal portfolio
  • Support subject-specific strategy development across the Journals group
  • Collaborate with content acquisition teams on ideas and collection and transfer pipelines
  • Reach out to potential authors to attract submissions and develop journals
  • Oversee content handling in Discover Series journals and handle individual submissions where required
  • Investigate and resolve publishing or research ethics cases
  • Communicate with teams to resolve editorial issues and prioritize author service while maintaining editorial standards
  • Advise on editorial policy development
  • Build relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors
  • Drive Editorial Board recruitment and engagement with journal strategy and development
  • Recruit and train new Editorial Board members
  • Host Senior Board and Editorial Board Meetings in person or online
  • Ensure Editorial Board members understand journal ethos, policies, training and role requirements
  • Contribute to marketing plans and community engagement activities
  • Develop journal website content and features
  • Attend conferences to promote journals and develop relevant networks
  • Write blogs and participate in social media activities to promote journal content and Discover values
  • Build relationships with colleagues in marketing, production, IT and other departments
  • Participate in cross-departmental projects, company-wide task forces and working groups
  • Represent the team in projects with Production, Sales, Marketing, Finance and Editorial colleagues

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a humanities or social science field
  • Clear interest in open access publishing
  • Interest in scientific research and current knowledge of a relevant field
  • Knowledge of editorial processes and related matters
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Highly customer focused
  • Strong analytical and critical appraisal skills
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and represent Discover at external events
  • Ability to respond to non-routine circumstances
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Ability to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals
  • Self-starter with a positive, can-do approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels

  • Previous editorial experience is a strong plus
