About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design and deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions on time, meeting technical standards and SPARK’s operational requirements across core systems
Build robust, secure software architecture capable of supporting the growth of SPARK’s 26-school network
Track and address technical debt each sprint
Mentor junior developers through structured guidance and constructive code reviews
Set, enforce, and continuously improve code quality standards
Drive defect rates and production incidents downward quarter-on-quarter
Maintain complete, current, and accessible documentation for major systems, APIs, and architectural decisions
Report to the Head of IT
Architect systems for scalability and maintainability
Translate complex business requirements into technical solutions
Build software systems supporting SPARK’s scholar information system, CRM, ERP, and integrated platforms

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience
Minimum 7–10 years in software development
At least 2 years in a senior or technical lead role
Experience with multiple programming languages and frameworks
Strong command of English, written and spoken
Clear criminal record
SAPS clearance certificate required
Ability to design scalable and maintainable architectures
Ability to mentor junior developers and conduct constructive code reviews
Ability to translate complex business requirements into technical solutions
Ability to track, prioritise, and resolve technical debt per sprint
Architecturally minded, quality-focused, proactive, stakeholder-fluent, and mission-connected
