About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design and deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions on time, meeting technical standards and SPARK’s operational requirements across core systems
- Build robust, secure software architecture capable of supporting the growth of SPARK’s 26-school network
- Track and address technical debt each sprint
- Mentor junior developers through structured guidance and constructive code reviews
- Set, enforce, and continuously improve code quality standards
- Drive defect rates and production incidents downward quarter-on-quarter
- Maintain complete, current, and accessible documentation for major systems, APIs, and architectural decisions
- Report to the Head of IT
- Architect systems for scalability and maintainability
- Translate complex business requirements into technical solutions
- Build software systems supporting SPARK’s scholar information system, CRM, ERP, and integrated platforms
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience
- Minimum 7–10 years in software development
- At least 2 years in a senior or technical lead role
- Experience with multiple programming languages and frameworks
- Strong command of English, written and spoken
- Clear criminal record
- SAPS clearance certificate required
- Ability to design scalable and maintainable architectures
- Ability to mentor junior developers and conduct constructive code reviews
- Ability to translate complex business requirements into technical solutions
- Ability to track, prioritise, and resolve technical debt per sprint
