About the role
- Serve as the instrumentation and controls subject matter expert, providing technical leadership across all phases of capital projects, from concept through startup.
- Lead instrumentation engineering activities through Pre-FEED, FEED, detailed design, construction support, and startup/commissioning.
- Develop Scopes of Work (SOWs), Basis of Design documents, and instrumentation deliverables for capital project execution.
- Specify, select, and apply instrumentation, sensing elements, transmitters, control valves, and final control elements, including pneumatic, hydraulic, PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems.
- Design instrumentation systems suitable for industrial plant environments, ensuring operability, maintainability, accessibility, and safety.
- Direct the development and review of engineering drawings, specifications, and design deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy and consistency.
- Perform instrumentation sizing calculations, including protective devices, and verify vendor selections.
- Develop and support instrumentation cost estimates, schedules, and manpower loading for capital projects.
- Review vendor packages and develop integration strategies for plant control systems.
- Apply and support Fieldbus type and smart instrumentation systems where appropriate.
- Collaborate with process engineering to develop P&IDs, control narratives, and control strategies.
- Provide technical direction to contractors, designers, maintenance, and plant personnel, including oversight of outsourced engineering work.
- Manage instrumentation execution through engineering and construction while integrating plant stakeholders to meet operational needs.
- Ensure compliance with Solstice Engineering Standards, site-specific requirements, and plant standards.
- Support or lead development and revision of Instrumentation and Control SOPs.
- Ensure QA/QC requirements are defined and met for all capital installations.
- Apply electrical area classification standards (NFPA, IEC, etc.) and appropriate compliance methods (IS, purging, enclosures).
- Develop and review User Requirements Specifications (URS), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and construction bid specifications.
- Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and support functional safety reviews, including SIL and SIS applications.
- Maintain integrity of all instrumentation documentation, drawings, and control system records.
- Utilize AutoCAD (2D/3D), CADWorx, and other design tools to support detailed engineering.
- Drive value engineering, cost control, and continuous improvement within the instrumentation discipline.
- Prepare instrumentation estimate packages and construction work order packages.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, Instrumentation, or Controls Engineering with 8–10 years of experience in process control, instrumentation design, or engineering within an industrial manufacturing and/or engineering design environment.
- Willingness to travel up to 25%, as required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Strong working knowledge of PIP, NEC, NFPA, IEC, API, and related codes and standards.
- Experience with SmartPlant / INtools or similar instrumentation databases.
- Proven ability to interface across disciplines (process, electrical, mechanical, project management).
- Experience working with Procurement and supporting vendor evaluations.
- Background in non-capital alternatives, value analysis, and optimization.
- Demonstrated leadership in safety culture and compliance.
- Experience in industrial chemical or petrochemical environments.
- Familiarity with SAP.
- Experience with commissioning, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, MOC, LOTO, and system testing.
- Working knowledge of networked control systems.
- Experience implementing and configuring PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems for batch and continuous processes.
- Knowledge of instrumentation materials of construction and UPS specification and sizing.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification (or equivalent experience) preferred.
- Self-starter with strong ownership mindset, bias for action, and collaborative leadership style.
