About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead backend design and implementation for Direct-to-Cloud and Edge/Matter camera integration within SmartThings
Build high-throughput, low-latency APIs and event-driven microservices for live AV streaming, clip recording, and video device management
Drive architectural discussions and system design reviews
Establish engineering best practices and mentor other engineers
Partner with firmware, mobile, Matter, security, and product management teams to deliver device onboarding and streaming experiences
Set up system observability, including tracing, metrics, and alerting
Participate in the on-call rotation to ensure high availability and reliability for consumer-facing production systems

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
5+ years of production experience in backend software engineering, with demonstrated experience as a senior technical contributor
High proficiency in JVM languages, specifically Kotlin or Scala, as well as Python
Strong hands-on experience building distributed systems on AWS, including EC2, Kubernetes/K8s, Lambda, DynamoDB, and ElastiCache
Experience with real-time video/audio streaming protocols such as WebRTC or event-driven streaming frameworks such as Kafka, Kinesis, or EventBridge
Proven experience designing, scaling, and maintaining production REST/gRPC APIs and microservices
Strong system design capability
Excellent communication skills and cross-functional technical collaboration experience
Experience automating infrastructure with Terraform/CDK and testing and deployment pipelines
Desired: experience with IoT protocols including Matter, Thread, MQTT, and mTLS/PKI security frameworks
Desired: deep experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Sumo Logic, or OpenTelemetry
Desired: experience handling high-concurrency, low-latency media streams at scale
