About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Build and evolve the Core Commerce Services platform
Create scalable, channel-independent checkout capabilities from technical discovery and design through implementation and production
Define APIs, domain boundaries, and integration patterns
Make pragmatic decisions regarding scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability
Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment, and dependent teams
Maintain clear ownership boundaries
Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews, and technical feedback
Raise engineering standards across the team
Partner with Product to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
Establish foundations for AI-powered assistants, agentic commerce, and emerging channels

Requirements

What you’ll need

Strong Java and backend engineering expertise
Experience designing and building backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems
Hands-on contribution to production code
Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership
Strong system design and architecture capabilities
Ability to take significant technical ownership with a high level of autonomy
Comfort working in a greenfield / 0-to-1 environment
Ability to explore options, evaluate trade-offs, and make pragmatic technical decisions
Strong track record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence
Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces is a valuable plus, not a requirement
