About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support the River Water Quality Monitoring (RWQM) programme on a 12-month fixed-term contract
  • Manage calibration, maintenance, and registration of water quality monitoring equipment
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulatory requirements and deliver accurate, reliable data
  • Support day-to-day laboratory operations
  • Contribute technical expertise to method development, problem-solving, and continuous improvement
  • Plan and prioritise workloads to meet operational deadlines and respond to changing priorities
  • Support implementation and optimisation of laboratory methods and processes
  • Conduct quality control checks and maintain accurate equipment records and full audit trails
  • Deliver training and coaching to laboratory technicians and contribute to competency assessments
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and liaise with internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturers
  • Maintain stock levels of consumables, reagents, and equipment
  • Help Severn Trent understand, protect, and enhance river quality across its region

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Qualified in environmental sciences, ideally chemistry, or minimum of three years laboratory experience
  • Passion for and existing knowledge around water quality processes and river health is ideal
  • Strong analytical and methodical thinking
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and high attention to detail
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in data analysis
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to prioritise work streams
  • Good IT skills
  • Previous experience working in a regulated environment
  • HNC/HND in a relevant science-based subject (degree level highly desirable) or minimum of 3 years laboratory experience
  • May be required to participate in standby rota cover
