About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Monthly Close Process: Collaborate and complete monthly, quarterly and year-end close procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements and management reporting, ensuring best practice and efficiency without compromising quality.
- Financial Analysis: Complete general ledger reconciliations and maintain balance sheet reconciliation files. Update, reconcile and complete management analytical reports and schedules. Complete monthly Intercompany reconciliations and month end foreign exchange adjustments.
- Statutory & Regulatory Compliance: Contribute to the year-end audit efforts, including close collaboration with external auditors, and assist with the production of year end statutory accounts.
- Technical Accounting: Maintain the chart of accounts, an orderly accounting filing system, and a system of controls over accounting transactions, ensuring best practices and efficiency without compromising quality.
- Adhere to internal control processes to ensure compliance with accounting policies and mitigate financial risks. Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
- Identify ad hoc accounting issues and improvements as they occur and recommend solutions.
- Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Support Finance team members as needed e.g.during periods of sickness or holiday.
- Cost of Goods Sold: Own the financial analysis and reporting of Cost of Goods Sold across all business lines. Analyze COGS by business line, product and geography. Investigate significant fluctuations and/or unusual items within COGS and explain key drivers affecting cost trends.
- Financial Insight: Translate inventory and COGS activity into meaningful business insights. Explain the financial story behind inventory movements, gross margins and cost trends. Monitor and explain gross margin trends and fluctuations. Perform profitability analysis by product and business line and investigate unusual margin variances.
- Inventory Valuation: Own the financial integrity of inventory valuation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. Manage the costs associated with manufacturing, materials, labor, and other expenses, ensuring accurate financial control and recognition.
- Monitor inventory reserves, obsolescence and recoverability. Plan, coordinate, and supervise inventory counts, ensuring reconciliation between physical and system records. Validate vendor statements and investigate discrepancies to ensure accurate reconciliation of physical inventories.
- Leadership: Identify cost accounting issues and recommend actionable solutions. Provide guidance and knowledge-sharing across teams, helping strengthen financial and operational awareness. Drive initiatives to improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and process consistency. Thrive in an evolving environment by proactively addressing ambiguity and operational challenges. Act as a subject matter expert for inventory and COGS, mentoring colleagues and providing guidance to cross-functional teams to improve financial awareness and accounting consistency.
- Finance Optimization & Improvement Initiatives: Partner closely with the Business Operations and Finance teams to refine and optimize inventory coding structures and system setups, improving accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of inventory processes. Identify gaps in current inventory workflows and drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline inventory management within the ERP system. Support ERP enhancements, implementations, or upgrades related to inventory and supply chain modules.
- Revenue & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with the Revenue team to ensure both revenue and costs of sales are accurately recorded, including inventory-related coding for invoicing and revenue recognition. Review billing practices tied to inventory transactions to ensure alignment with accounting policies and operational workflows.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of accounting experience, including 2+ years of accounting experience in inventory management and/or cost accounting in an inventory intensive environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues, challenge assumptions and translate financial data into meaningful business insights.
- Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for process improvement, influence change and implement practical, scalable solutions.
- Comfortable working in an evolving environment, exercising sound professional judgment when navigating ambiguity and incomplete information.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to quality, accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across Finance, Operations, Supply Chain and other business functions.
- Naturally curious with a desire to understand the operational drivers behind financial results rather than simply recording transactions.
- Ability to connect accounting outcomes with operational activities and communicate findings clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- CPA/CMA designation (or equivalent professional accounting designation) required.
- Nice to have: Public practice experience working with manufacturing clients.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with Power BI is an asset.
- Experience in hardware, manufacturing, agriculture or technology environments.
- Experience with inventory valuation, inventory analytics and profitability analysis.
