About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Help shape Santander UK's overall economic view by contributing to the development and communication of the bank's central economic outlook and key economic risk scenarios.
- Help the EA team produce and maintain the macroeconomic, retail financial market and housing market forecasts used across Santander UK for planning, stress testing, IFRS 9, climate risk assessment and other strategic and regulatory exercises.
- Take ownership of designated areas within the team's forecasting framework, becoming a recognised subject matter expert both internally and externally.
- Lead the workstreams for either IFRS9, or for the stress testing scenarios including the BCST, internal stress tests and climate.
- Monitor economic, financial and policy developments, assessing their implications for Santander UK, its customers and the wider banking sector.
- Help to prepare economic analysis, briefing papers and presentations for senior governance forums, including the Asset & Liability Committee (ALCO), Board and other executive committees and sign off in the absence of the Chief Economist.
- Respond to requests from senior management and business teams for economic insight, analysis and commentary, translating complex economic developments into clear and actionable communications.
- Present economic insights and forecasts to a variety of audiences, including senior executives, risk committees and business stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across Risk, Finance, Treasury, Strategy and other business areas to ensure economic forecasts effectively support their requirements.
- Represent the Economic Analysis team at senior governance forums and executive meetings as required.
- Lead research into key long-term economic trends, including productivity, demographics, housing, climate transition, consumer finances and technological change.
- Drive innovation in forecasting methodologies, economic modelling and the use of alternative data sources.
- Develop, maintain and enhance econometric models and analytical tools to improve forecasting accuracy and deepen understanding of economic and financial market trends.
- Publish economic insights and thought leadership to support internal decision-making and strategic discussions.
- Act as a spokesperson for Santander UK on economic matters with media, industry bodies, regulators and external stakeholders.
- Represent Santander UK at industry forums, conferences, roundtables and meetings with policymakers and regulatory authorities.
- Build and maintain relationships with economists, academics, think tanks, government departments and industry associations.
- Contribute to the development of Santander UK's external economic profile through thought leadership and market commentary where appropriate.
- Help to produce regular economic reporting and information packs, including monthly updates on macroeconomic and retail financial market developments for internal stakeholders and external publication where required.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Proven experience in applying economic analysis with knowledge of the UK economy and of UK retail financial markets (eg housing market) (Required)
- An upper second degree level in Economics (Preferred)
- Solid analytical skills especially in statistics and econometrics (Required)
- Experience of working with macroeconomic models such as the Global Oxford Economics Macro model (Required)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Preferred)
- Experience of presenting to senior stakeholders or to external stakeholders (Preferred)
