About the role
- On the surface, underwriting is a technical job—analyzing information, evaluating data, making recommendations based on formulas and standards, and pricing policies accurately. Luckily, SAIF underwriters are much more human than machine. They make decisions based on numbers and data, yes, but they also consider the people and stories behind the data. They collaborate with colleagues in different SAIF departments; build and maintain strong relationships with customers; communicate decisions tactfully; and influence positive behavior in workplaces across Oregon. SAIF’s premium audit and underwriting services division is seeking a program manager for its assigned risk pool (ARP) program, serving employers who are unable to obtain workers’ compensation coverage in the standard market. The program manager will work closely with both internal and external business partners to ensure successful implementation of the assigned risk pool. As the point person for communication for ARP with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), the program manager will need a strong focus on relationship-management and communication skills. Strong team management skills are also required to ensure the program runs smoothly and is in adherence to NCCI ARP requirements. The program manager will supervise and lead ARP audit and underwriting staff, including managing workload, coaching, file reviews, team building, and performance management. Other responsibilities include managing the ARP program budget, preparing and analyzing detailed financial reports, coordinating and responding to NCCI audits with precision and timeliness, and overseeing the ARP bidding process. These tasks require strong organizational skills to track multiple deadlines and documentation requirements, as well as sharp analytical abilities to interpret complex data, ensure compliance, and support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will have five years’ experience in workers’ compensation insurance, preferably in underwriting, and three years in supervisory or leadership roles. If that sounds like you—and if you want to join an organization that embraces a hands-on, team-based approach to problem-solving and solution-development—please apply now.
