About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on US state utility regulation, regulatory risk, and utility financial performance, providing guidance and insight on complex regulatory and industry developments.
  • Lead the identification, analysis, and interpretation of significant regulatory, legislative, and policy developments affecting electric and natural gas utilities across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Own and continuously enhance proprietary regulatory datasets, analytical frameworks, and research processes to ensure scalability, consistency, and long-term sustainability.
  • Produce and oversee high-impact research, comparative evaluations, and thought leadership that support investor, utility, and industry decision-making.
  • Partner across S&P Global divisions and research teams to develop integrated insights, innovative products, and client-focused solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging trends in utility regulation, energy policy, grid modernization, and market design, identifying implications for clients and opportunities for new research.
  • Leverage advanced analytics, AI-enabled tools, and technology-driven workflows to improve research efficiency, expand analytical capabilities, and enhance product quality.
  • Build and maintain relationships with regulators, utility executives, industry organizations, and other subject matter experts to strengthen market intelligence and research depth.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for clients by addressing complex inquiries, delivering presentations, and communicating regulatory developments and market implications.
  • Mentor and support junior analysts by sharing expertise, reviewing research, and promoting best practices in analytical rigor, data quality, and written communication.
  • Recommend strategic enhancements to research methodologies, operational processes, and product offerings based on market developments and client needs.
  • Demonstrate leadership by fostering collaboration, encouraging innovation, and helping advance the team's objectives and S&P Global's values.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Extensive work experience analyzing utility regulation, energy policy, financial performance, or related areas within the energy industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in interpreting complex regulatory, legislative, financial, and market information and translating findings into actionable insights.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders and communicate effectively with clients, industry participants, and senior leadership.
  • Experience developing analytical frameworks, managing large datasets, and improving research processes and operational workflows.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and database management; experience with Python, SQL, AI-enabled analytical tools, or other advanced technologies is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to author authoritative research and present complex topics clearly to professional audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, industry engagement, and staying current on emerging market, regulatory, and technology trends.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, Public Policy, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across teams, mentor colleagues, and contribute to a high-performing research culture.
