About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice
- Obtain and document patient chief complaints, vital signs, and health maintenance information
- Document patient and family needs and participate in planning and implementing patient care
- Administer ordered medications within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines
- Identify changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems appropriately
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physicians
- Travel to other facilities and adjust hours as directed to meet patient care needs
- Maintain clean, orderly, safe work areas, exam rooms, equipment, and supplies
- Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient contact, troubleshooting, and medication review
- Accurately document in electronic medical records
- Manage EHR in-basket messages under provider instructions
- Perform front desk workflows including registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
- Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and visits; collect co-pays
- Order supplies, track referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies
- Perform clinical tasks including specimen collection, laboratory testing, instrument sterilization, injections, suture removal, and wound dressing changes
Requirements
What you’ll need- Active Medical Assisting certification required within 12 months of start date: CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA, or accepted equivalent
- BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations
- High school diploma or GED required
- Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program required within 30 days of employment
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training preferred
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience preferred
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment
- Medical terminology knowledge

- Ability to multitask
- Ability to use standard office equipment including computer, copier, phone, and fax machine
- Ability to complete skills or competency checklists
- Ability to exercise universal precautions and use personal protective equipment
- Ability to work with adult and geriatric patient populations
