About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between patients and physician practices
  • Greet patients and community members respectfully and provide excellent customer service
  • Answer, route, and manage internal and external calls
  • Schedule patients and enter scheduling information accurately into the computer system
  • Process patients as they present for appointments and maintain patient flow
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly, informing the supervisor of department and patient issues
  • Process admission paperwork and perform basic insurance verification
  • Complete and verify patient demographic and insurance information during registration
  • Correct registration errors and record lobby wait-time indicators
  • Calculate patient liabilities and collect/process patient payments
  • Reconcile the cash drawer at the close of the day
  • Perform charge entry for external services as needed
  • Schedule referrals, follow-up appointments, and other patient services
  • Assist patients with online scheduling and MyChart
  • Help patients obtain and track referrals for follow-up services
  • Obtain proper authorizations and pre-certifications for procedures when applicable
  • Pull, file, maintain, and route patient charts according to office policy
  • Verify prescription benefits in the electronic health record
  • Refer patients to financial counselors when needed
  • Complete accounts in revenue cycle software
  • Float regularly to BSSF MOB (West Ashley) and Moncks Corner MOB and occasionally cover other physician practice locations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • Prior experience in patient registration/healthcare (preferred)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9 coding (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Typing and computer skills, including 40+ WPM typing speed
  • Basic math skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage with staff and patients professionally
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel by car to off-site locations occasionally
  • Ability to work day shift: Monday–Thursday, 7:30am–4:30pm; Friday, 7:30am–2:30pm
  • Ability to exercise universal precautions and use personal protective equipment and devices
  • Manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination
  • Ability to hear alarms, telephones, and audio recordings
  • Ability to perform repetitive arm/hand movements and reach above shoulder
  • Ability to maneuver the weight of patients
  • Ability to work during periods of high stress, fluctuating workloads, and constant interruptions
