About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead and manage a team of data reporters and editors.
Set standards for reporting, writing, and production across data-driven series.
Edit data journalism for accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength.
Develop and pitch story and series ideas.
Guide projects from concept through publication with reporters, editors, and graphics staff.
Coach and develop reporters and editors in data skills and writing.
Own the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output.
Partner with survey and research specialists to ensure accurate, well-sourced reporting.
Coordinate cross-functional collaboration so stories publish on time.
Help develop new data-driven series, identify valuable datasets, and shape surveys and research.

Requirements

What you’ll need

7–10+ years of relevant newsroom experience.
Strong track record in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
Demonstrated leadership or team management experience in a newsroom.
Sharp editorial judgment and strong editing skills, especially with data-heavy stories.
Comfort working with data of varying quality and completeness.
Ability to identify when numbers do not add up.
Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
Experience editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects preferred.
Familiarity with R or Python preferred.
Experience with data visualization techniques preferred.
Legal industry reporting or research experience preferred.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously preferred.
Degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field preferred.
