About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and manage a team of data reporters and editors.
  • Set standards for reporting, writing, and production across data-driven series.
  • Edit data journalism for accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength.
  • Develop and pitch story and series ideas.
  • Guide projects from concept through publication with reporters, editors, and graphics staff.
  • Coach and develop reporters and editors in data skills and writing.
  • Own the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output.
  • Partner with survey and research specialists to ensure accurate, well-sourced reporting.
  • Coordinate cross-functional collaboration so stories publish on time.
  • Help develop new data-driven series, identify valuable datasets, and shape surveys and research.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7–10+ years of relevant newsroom experience.
  • Strong track record in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
  • Demonstrated leadership or team management experience in a newsroom.
  • Sharp editorial judgment and strong editing skills, especially with data-heavy stories.
  • Comfort working with data of varying quality and completeness.
  • Ability to identify when numbers do not add up.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
  • Experience editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects preferred.
  • Familiarity with R or Python preferred.
  • Experience with data visualization techniques preferred.
  • Legal industry reporting or research experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously preferred.
  • Degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field preferred.
