About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and manage a team of data reporters and editors.
- Set standards for reporting, writing, and production across data-driven series.
- Edit data journalism for accuracy, clarity, fairness, and narrative strength.
- Develop and pitch story and series ideas.
- Guide projects from concept through publication with reporters, editors, and graphics staff.
- Coach and develop reporters and editors in data skills and writing.
- Own the editorial quality and integrity of the team's output.
- Partner with survey and research specialists to ensure accurate, well-sourced reporting.
- Coordinate cross-functional collaboration so stories publish on time.
- Help develop new data-driven series, identify valuable datasets, and shape surveys and research.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 7–10+ years of relevant newsroom experience.
- Strong track record in data-driven or investigative reporting and editing.
- Demonstrated leadership or team management experience in a newsroom.
- Sharp editorial judgment and strong editing skills, especially with data-heavy stories.
- Comfort working with data of varying quality and completeness.
- Ability to identify when numbers do not add up.
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
- Experience editing or producing recurring data series or investigative projects preferred.
- Familiarity with R or Python preferred.
- Experience with data visualization techniques preferred.
- Legal industry reporting or research experience preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously preferred.
- Degree in journalism, public policy, political science, economics, statistics, or a related field preferred.
