About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the end-to-end editorial process, ensuring every piece of content meets MoneySense’s high standards for accuracy, independence, and authority.
  • Rethink the editorial calendar to reflect shifts in consumer behavior, prioritizing high-value, expert-led content that goes beyond simple search queries.
  • Recruit, brief, and manage a roster of freelance contributors and vetted financial professionals (CFPs, tax experts, etc.) for quotes, columns, and the "Ask MoneySense" franchise.
  • Assign and edit content optimized for both traditional search (SEO) and generative engines (GEO), prioritizing proprietary data, original reporting, and expert insight that AI cannot replicate.
  • Produce data-led stories by combining Canadian public datasets (StatsCan, CMHC, Bank of Canada) with Ratehub’s proprietary data to generate unique financial insights.
  • Lead reactive coverage for major financial events (e.g., Bank of Canada rate decisions), ensuring expert-led analysis is published and distributed within hours of an announcement.
  • Develop reporting formats that feature real Canadians and expert commentary (e.g., financial profiles and annotated case studies) that go deeper than anything AI can generate.
  • Manage the update cycle for "Best of" guides and cornerstone content to ensure they remain accurate, competitive, and relevant for readers.
  • Monitor performance metrics across Google Analytics, SEMrush, and other tools to identify shifts in how readers discover and interact with our content.
  • Use data insights to optimize content, improving discoverability and the reader journey from first touchpoint to financial decision.
  • Guide social media and newsletter distribution strategies, ensuring content is packaged effectively to drive audience retention and direct engagement.
  • Oversee digital publishing workflows to ensure content is formatted and distributed in adherence to brand standards across all platforms.
  • Work with product and engineering on interactive tools and content experiences that create reasons to visit and return to MoneySense.ca.
  • Collaborate with sales on branded content and sponsorship packages while maintaining editorial independence.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of experience in digital journalism or editorial publishing, with at least 2 years in a leadership or senior editorial role.
  • Deep knowledge of the Canadian personal finance landscape, including mortgages, investing, taxes, and banking.
  • Proven ability to lead a content operation end-to-end, from initial strategy and commissioning to editing, publishing, and performance analysis.
  • A track record of managing freelancers and subject-matter experts
  • Expertise in SEO and a working knowledge of GEO, with the ability to turn search and generative engine data into an actionable editorial plan.
  • Experience with newsletter platforms and audience engagement strategies designed to build direct reader relationships.
  • Experience with data-led storytelling, including the ability to interpret public datasets (like StatsCan or CMHC) and translate them into reader-friendly insights.
  • Exceptional editing skills, with a focus on accuracy, clarity, and maintaining a consistent brand voice across a large volume of content.
  • Proficiency with the modern editorial stack, specifically WordPress (or similar CMS), SEMrush (or similar SEO tools), and Google Analytics.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
