About the role

  • Set up, equip, and manage an optics and photonics lab for trapped-ion quantum computing
  • Work alongside engineers, physicists, and R&D colleagues to drive innovations in trapped-ion quantum computing technologies
  • Ensure effective collaboration across optical, mechanical, electronics, and other technical systems
  • Design, construct, test, and align optical systems including lasers and imaging systems
  • Provide technical support and expertise in planning, development, maintenance, and management of the new lab facility
  • Characterize individual photonic components and overall photonic circuit performance; develop high-sensitivity measurement techniques
  • Work with photonic designers and fabrication teams to verify design performance and understand fabrication variation
  • Plan, design, and build optical characterization equipment and metrology testbeds for novel photonic materials and architectures
  • Communicate results internally and externally through publications and presentations

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, optics, astronomy, computer science, or math
  • 3 years of experience (degree inclusive) with design and implementation of optical experiments including optoelectronic devices (e.g., lasers and photodetectors), optical fiber, optical components (e.g., lenses, mirrors, and polarizers), and scientific software
  • Due to national security requirements, must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen
  • Due to contractual requirements, must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident/green card holder, or workers granted asylum or refugee status)
