About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Operate loaders, grinders, trommel screens, compost turners, and other yard equipment to receive and process green waste
- Turn compost and load finished compost into customer vehicles
- Greet customers, explain yard procedures and proper compost use, answer questions, sell compost, and process card payments
- Verify municipal residency and prevent unauthorized use by ineligible users
- Inspect incoming loads, estimate and record yard waste type and volume, reject contaminated or unapproved materials, and direct customers to another facility when needed
- Help customers unload materials and maintain safe traffic and service areas
- Monitor compost windrows, record temperatures, and turn or adjust material to maintain oxygen, moisture, and temperature
- Clean, inspect, maintain, and repair tools, containers, machinery, and compost equipment
- Weld and fabricate replacement parts when needed
- Identify and immediately report unsafe conditions, fires, equipment problems, accidents, injuries, and property damage
- Maintain accurate yard records, operating logs, sales files, and regulatory forms
- Follow safety, operating, and environmental requirements
- Assist other municipal solid waste staff with related duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Any combination of education or experience demonstrating ability to perform courteous customer service, proper recordkeeping, and heavy equipment operation
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work
- Ability to follow directions and communicate effectively
- Knowledge of safe use of hand tools and equipment
- Valid, lawful Driver License
- Forklift Certification required within 6 months of hire
- Front loader experience and/or Commercial Driver License preferred
- Composting, landscaping, or gardening experience preferred
- Successful drug screen and criminal background check required if selected
