About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide professional legal support to Department of Legal Affairs attorneys across practice areas
  • Coordinate, manage, and complete legal support tasks for Providence St. Joseph Health operations
  • Manage legal matters in partnership with attorneys, exercise independent judgment, recommend and carry out courses of action, and bring matters to closure
  • Monitor and manage projects and legal matters, including transactions, governance, investigations, and litigation
  • Assist with legal-services intake, triage, matter creation, tracking, management, and prioritization through ServiceNow
  • Request and organize documentation and information from business partners
  • Identify and refine issues for attorney review and legal advice
  • Review legal invoices as requested
  • Collaborate with outside counsel and communicate with internal and external clients, vendors, and business associates
  • Use ServiceNow, Legal Tracker, iManage, and document management systems for matter management, filing, and reporting
  • Prepare meeting and presentation materials; compose, edit, and proofread correspondence, memos, and presentations
  • Support onboarding and training of new team members
  • Identify process improvements and help develop practice tools, forms, policies, and model documents
  • Draft and review contracts, physician/provider agreements, clinical education and research agreements, supply chain agreements, NDAs, letters of intent, Business Associate Agreements, and other legal documents
  • Lead or participate in document review and conduct legal research
  • Maintain DLA website content and collect/update Providence division and local information
  • Handle healthcare operations matters involving intellectual property, regulatory issues, contracting, medical staff, pre-litigation disputes, investigations, litigation, and regulatory filings
  • Coordinate conflict waiver requests and Medical Staff matters
  • Maintain knowledge of and explain federal and state healthcare laws, including Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, Medicare and Medicaid billing rules, HIPAA-HITECH, and EMTALA

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate's Degree in an ABA-approved Paralegal Studies Program, or certificate from a paralegal program at an accredited secondary institution, or a degree from an accredited secondary institution requiring at least 24 semester units in law-related courses
  • 5 years of paralegal experience in a relevant practice area with an in-house legal team, or equivalent experience in a law practice setting
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience performing substantive legal work for multiple attorneys in a relevant practice area
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, trustworthiness, and integrity
  • Understanding of ABA Model Rule 5.3 and avoidance of unauthorized practice of law
  • Ability to independently use ServiceNow, Legal Tracker, iManage, and document management systems
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of Office 365
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Ability to organize multiple projects, schedules, and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and use initiative
  • Ability to work in a complex business environment
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems and conflicts through clear communication
  • Ability to explain laws, legal concepts, and tools to varied audiences
  • Ability to identify legal risks and escalate issues appropriately
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Paralegal Studies, Law, or Legal Studies
  • Preferred: Notary Public upon hire
  • Preferred: 2 years of healthcare industry exposure with large integrated health systems
