About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead deep exploratory research into emerging and esoteric problem spaces, developing original views on markets, customers, and technologies
Identify technologies and market opportunities for startups, focusing on compute infrastructure across hardware, software, and business models
Translate research into early company theses, business models, product concepts, and go-to-market hypotheses
Validate research through customer interviews, sourcing design partners, and early pilot engagements
Synthesize findings into pitch decks, internal memos, and research artifacts for incubation and investment decisions
Develop initial business plans covering technology architecture, product roadmap, and go-to-market strategy
Evaluate silicon architectures and benchmark hardware performance
Build relationships across the chip design, fabrication, and systems ecosystem
Create systems serving as technical foundations for ventures incubated within Primary Labs
Work directly with the AI Infrastructure Investment team and report to Partner Brian Schechter

Requirements

What you’ll need

4+ years of experience in a technical role within the semiconductor or compute industry
Deep fluency in chip architecture and hardware-systems tradeoffs, including cost, power, latency, and yield
Familiarity with tools and workflows for silicon design or compute infrastructure
Excellent deep primary and secondary research skills
Ability to synthesize customer conversations, market data, and competitive dynamics into actionable insights
Hunger for autonomy and real responsibility
Entrepreneurial inclination, including building side projects, experiments, and prototypes
Interest in compute capability as a competitive frontier
Fluency in business models, unit economics, and market sizing
Ability to assess feasibility and scalability of new venture ideas quickly
