Full-stack Engineer

• Author and review patches to the PostgreSQL core engine: performance, features, bug fixes, and security.
• Maintain Postgres extensions, both open-source (community projects we depend on) and proprietary (Planetscale-owned).
• Review community patches with rigor on correctness, stability, and PostgreSQL coding conventions.
• Engage the PostgreSQL community in design discussions, the 5 annual Commitfests, and conferences.
• Root-cause Postgres issues affecting Planetscale customers and turn fixes into upstream patches when applicable.
• Improve documentation for PostgreSQL and our extensions as part of every change.

Software Engineer – Postgres Internals

• Work on app.planetscale.com, responsible for creation and management of Vitess and Postgres databases
• Work across languages, with area in Go (CLI), React + TypeScript (dashboard), Ruby on Rails (backend API)
• Learn and deeply understand Vitess and Postgres
• Build, document, and publish RESTful APIs used by end users and dashboard
• Work on internal admin tools to assist engineers and support teams
• Independently solve engineering and business problems with high autonomy

Software Engineer – Surfaces

• Instrument Vitess, MySQL and PostgreSQL to emit performance data
• Design, implement and maintain our data collection pipeline
• Create intuitive dashboards and visualizations that surface actionable database insights
• Develop APIs and integrations that expose insights data to customers
• Collaborate with other teams to define the next generation of database observability features
• Build tools for query analysis, performance profiling, and anomaly detection
• Own features end-to-end, from initial design through production deployment and monitoring
• Partner with customers and support teams to understand real-world observability challenges

Software Engineer – Insights

• You will work on building the best solution for sharded Postgres, a project we're calling Neki: https://www.neki.dev/
• You will design and build critical systems that power PlanetScale's database platform, serving millions of queries per second for some of the world's largest applications.
• You will collaborate with a team of expert engineers to solve complex distributed systems challenges.
• You will work independently to solve engineering and business problems with little direction and high autonomy.
• You will work directly with customers to understand their needs and translate them into robust technical solutions.

Software Engineer – PlanetScale Vitess

• You will design and build the control plane that provisions, scales, and heals Postgres clusters with minimal customer-visible downtime.
• You will build and maintain high availability, disaster recovery, and data protection solutions that keep customer databases safe through infrastructure failures.
• You will tune Postgres to operate at scale for some of the largest and most demanding workloads in the world.
• You will build tooling and automation for database operations, backup, restore, and migration workflows - and participate in an on-call rotation.
• You will work directly with customers to understand their workloads and translate real-world needs into platform improvements.

Security Engineer

• Design and implement security controls for PlanetScale's cloud-native database platform
• Collaborate with engineering teams to conduct security reviews, threat modeling, and provide secure coding guidance
• Focus on proactive red teaming and testing to identify vulnerabilities
• Evaluate, procure, and implement proactive security tools
• Work with compliance team to ensure adherence to security frameworks (SOC 2, PCI DSS)
• Build security automation and tooling to scale security practices
• Respond to security incidents and conduct post-incident reviews

• Create technical content to help customers and engineers at-large learn how Postgres, MySQL, Vitess, Neki, and the PlanetScale ecosystem works
• Speak at conferences and events, representing PlanetScale in the database and engineering community
• Create and refine product documentation
• Host livestreams and webinars to engage with and educate our community
• Your role may contain between 20-50% travel to connect with developers at events worldwide
