About the role

  • Build, validate, and maintain accurate power flow models that reliably solve for a wide range of system conditions, including new generation and load patterns and outage scenarios
  • Use PSS/e, MUST, TARA, PAAC or equivalent software to ensure flows remain within acceptable reactive, thermal and stability limits
  • Lead efforts to improve and automate power flow calculations, using modern tools and scripting (Python, Oracle SQL, Excel)
  • Coordinate with neighboring balancing authorities to incorporate external data and ensure regional reliability
  • Drive biannual updates of PJM’s power system model and flowgate methodology, identifying and reviewing critical flowgates as the system evolves
  • Tackle new engineering challenges posed by the changing generation mix and grid resource patterns
  • Support the tools, processes and procedures associated with transmission service and interchange
  • Participate in innovative projects to support PJM’s mission and the industry’s transformation
  • Provide occasional on-call support with infrequent after-hours incidents
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards including FERC, NERC, and NAESB requirements
  • (Senior, Lead) Mentor and coach junior engineers in power flow concepts, modeling, and solution techniques

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Management Information Systems, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
  • (Senior) At least 5 years of experience in power flow studies and transmission system analysis
  • (Lead) At least 10 years’ experience in power flow studies, transmission system analysis and demonstrated leadership roles
  • Transmission Service Specialist: experience in application and project support, programming skills, familiarity with electric utility concepts
  • Proficiency with power flow modeling software (PSS/e, PowerWorld, MUST, Probe, or similar)
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with the MMWG’s IDC power flow model is preferred
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Python and Oracle SQL is a plus.
