About the role
- Own hands-on database operations and support for SQL Server and PostgreSQL in a large, multi-team engineering organization
- Work closely with DevOps teams to improve database reliability, observability, and day-to-day operations.
- Proactively tune schemas, indexes, and queries to support evolving application workloads.
- Diagnose and fix real performance problems: slow queries, poor execution plans, locking, and resource contention.
- Proactively monitor database health and implement improvements before issues reach production.
- Partner directly with engineering teams during design and development to guide data modeling and database usage.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Information Technology
- Microsoft SQL Server and AWS certified
- 3–5 years’ experience as a Database Administrator
- Demonstrated hands-on ownership of **production SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases**, including performance tuning and operational troubleshooting
- Experience operating databases on **AWS RDS**, including upgrades, patching, maintenance windows, backups, and service-specific limitations
- Strong working knowledge of **query execution, indexing strategies, and performance diagnostics** for both SQL Server and PostgreSQL
- Proven ability to **identify, diagnose, and resolve database performance and reliability issues** in live production environments
- Experience partnering directly with **DevOps and application engineering teams** to support and improve production systems
- Comfort owning database changes **end-to-end**, from analysis and implementation through validation and rollback if needed
- Familiarity with **monitoring, alerting, and observability** for database systems and interpreting operational signals
- Ability to communicate clearly and pragmatically about **tradeoffs, risks, and impact** to technical stakeholders.
