About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Define the north-star technical architecture for Pearson Virtual Schools' core platforms
- Lead migration and refactoring of legacy, monolithic, or on-premise systems into decoupled, cloud-native architectures
- Own multi-year modernization roadmaps and sequence initiatives to reduce legacy dependencies
- Present architectural strategy and trade-offs to steering committees and project boards
- Design elastic, demand-driven systems and cloud-native scaling patterns
- Architect event-driven integrations using message brokers, event streams, and saga patterns
- Establish API-first design across REST, gRPC, and GraphQL contracts
- Guide adoption of agentic, autonomous processing, background workers, self-healing units, and AI/LLM orchestration
- Define and champion architectural patterns and guardrails across engineering teams
- Review designs, resolve complex integration problems, and contribute to implementation
- Mentor senior engineers and architects on cloud patterns and distributed-systems trade-offs
- Advise engineering, product, and executive stakeholders on business impact, risk, and cost
- Partner with cybersecurity, data governance, and compliance teams on security and regulatory standards
- Evaluate vendor platforms and build-vs-buy decisions
- Track and report architecture health, uptime, IT service levels, integration risk, and adoption of modern patterns
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of software engineering and systems architecture experience
- Significant tenure at fast-growing, internet-based startups
- Proven experience modernizing legacy, on-premise, or monolithic enterprise systems into cloud-native architectures
- Deep expertise with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Hands-on experience with event-driven and asynchronous integration, message brokers, event streams, and saga patterns
- Strong API-first design discipline across REST, gRPC, and GraphQL
- Production-scale experience with containerization and orchestration, including Kubernetes and serverless container environments
- Familiarity with agentic workflows, background/autonomous processing, and AI/LLM orchestration patterns
- Exceptional communication skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent; advanced degree a plus
- EdTech, SaaS, or K-12 platform experience a plus, not required
