About the role
- Own end-to-end product requirements for payment features spanning card processing, ACH, digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Cash App Pay, Venmo), surcharging, and emerging modalities.
- Perform detailed money movement analysis across all payment modalities, tracing fund flows from authorization through settlement and funding to identify friction points, drive process improvements, and improve operational efficiency.
- Serve as the product organization’s closest partner to the engineering team, ensuring requirements are understood deeply and unambiguously, implementation decisions stay true to product intent, and the voice of the business is always present in the room.
- Write detailed PRDs, user stories, and acceptance criteria that engineering can execute against without ambiguity.
- Maintain a well-groomed backlog and facilitate sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives with the engineering team.
- Translate complex payment industry requirements, including network rules, compliance mandates, and processor constraints, into clear actionable tickets.
- Perform data analysis on payment flows, transaction outcomes, and platform usage patterns and drive actionable conclusions to inform product decisions and identify improvement opportunities.
- Review API capabilities and product features against best-in-class industry standards and competitive benchmarks and recommend targeted improvements that advance Payabli’s differentiation.
- Lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for new features and enhancements, coordinating with QA and engineering to validate functionality against requirements before release.
- Contribute to and maintain the product roadmap, balancing near-term delivery commitments with long-term strategic investments.
- Support OKR definition and track progress against key results for payment product initiatives.
- Conduct competitive analysis of payment processors and embedded payment platforms to inform prioritization decisions.
- Identify gaps and opportunities across Payabli’s nine verticals and help shape vertical-specific payment workflows.
- Partner with engineering leads, QA, and platform architects to ensure technical feasibility and sound design decisions.
- Collaborate with compliance and legal on payment regulations including NACHA rules, card network mandates, and state-level requirements.
- Work closely with Customer Success and Sales to gather merchant feedback and translate it into product improvements.
- Prepare and present product updates, feature briefs, and roadmap overviews for internal stakeholders and external partners.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in a Business Analyst, Product Owner, or Product Manager role within payments, fintech, or a financial services technology company.
- Deep end-to-end understanding of card payment processing, both card-present and card-not-present, spanning the full lifecycle including merchant boarding, transaction processing, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, dispute management, reporting, fees, and interchange.
- Strong working knowledge of ACH payments including NACHA operating rules, ACH transaction flows, return codes, Notifications of Change (NOCs), TPSP obligations, and common compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to write high-quality PRDs, user stories, and functional specifications that engineering teams can execute from directly.
- Demonstrated analytical strength with the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments, capable of driving clarity from incomplete or conflicting information while building trust equally with business stakeholders and engineering teams.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of API standards and best practices, with hands-on experience identifying and driving API improvements in a prior product or technical role.
- Demonstrated strength in understanding payment gateway architecture and how payments are routed, processed, and settled through a gateway and its downstream processor integrations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain complex payment concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong data analysis capabilities and comfort working with transaction datasets, reconciliation reports, settlement files, and deriving meaningful conclusions to drive product decisions.
- Proficiency in whiteboarding, creating flowcharts, process diagrams, wireframes, and mockups, along with the ability to facilitate discussions and drive alignment toward defined objectives.
- Experience working in agile or scrum environments with proficiency in tools like Linear, Jira, or similar project management platforms.
