About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform direct and indirect patient-care tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and direction of the department nurse manager
  • Assist with patient admission and discharge
  • Obtain vital signs and patient weights
  • Gather and secure patient valuables
  • Complete emergency-department technician documentation in the medical record
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs, wound preparation, simple dressings and orthopedic splinting as directed
  • Mobilize, lift, transfer, turn and position patients safely
  • Collect and test blood, urine, stool and other specimens
  • Assist with toileting, hygiene, dietary needs and comfort measures
  • Record intake and output and provide emotional support
  • Respond to call lights, monitor equipment alarms, round on and observe patients, and report patient status to nurses or providers
  • Escort and transport patients by wheelchair or stretcher within the hospital
  • Assist RNs, physicians and other healthcare team members
  • Maintain patient-care areas, clean equipment, distribute linen and supplies, and keep utility rooms clean
  • Transport specimens, equipment and medications
  • Order and stock supplies, patient rooms, carts and resuscitation rooms
  • Disinfect or discard equipment and supplies appropriately
  • Operate partly as a Health Unit Coordinator
  • Assist with emergency-department supply maintenance and quality-assurance activities
  • Support administrative operations and perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • One year recent experience (within the past 5 years) providing patient care in an emergency department or similar setting
  • EMT, CNA or MA certification, or equivalent education
  • BLS upon hire
  • Phlebotomy certification or equivalent experience
  • Ability to provide care across the age continuum, from infants through geriatric patients
  • Ability to perform 12-lead EKGs, wound preparation, simple dressings, orthopedic splinting, specimen collection and testing, and patient transport
  • Ability to perform safe patient lifts, transfers, turns, positioning, mobilization and restraint/seclusion observation
  • Ability to maintain patient-care areas, equipment, supplies and documentation
  • Drug test required
