About the role
- Represent the State of Oregon, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil lawsuits in state and federal trial courts as part of the Trial Division, Corrections Litigation Unit.
- Handle cases focusing on civil claims filed by adults in custody, including access to courts, free speech, transgender rights, free exercise of religion, and use of force.
- Defend against and prosecute state tort claims related to medical care and personal injury.
- Handle state habeas corpus claims alleging conditions of confinement violate federal and state constitutional standards.
- Maintain an active motions practice and frequent court appearances, including trial work and depositions.
- Communicate with clients and collaborate with a team of attorneys; report to Trial Division leadership as appropriate.
- Travel throughout Oregon for court appearances when in trial; work remotely and from the office with at least one in-office day per week.
Requirements
- Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar prior to appointment or reciprocity in progress at the time of application.
- At least three years of experience litigating civil actions in state or federal court as an attorney.
- Able to balance frequent court appearances and an active motions practice while maintaining excellent client communication.
- Willing and available to travel throughout Oregon for court appearances when in trial.
- Strong research and writing skills (requested).
- Experience litigating civil rights claims (requested).
- Civil trial experience (requested).
- Experience taking and defending depositions in state or federal court actions (requested).
- Experience engaging in mediation and settlement negotiations (requested).
- Attach resume, cover letter, and a writing sample (not to exceed seven pages) when applying; writing sample not required from current Oregon DOJ attorneys.
