About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide technical leadership, department management, and project execution oversight for structural engineering work
  • Schedule, organize, direct, and review structural engineering department resources and activities
  • Participate in developing new and expanding existing business opportunities
  • Provide customer support as a technical liaison and support regional business development initiatives
  • Hire staff, establish goals and expectations, and conduct performance reviews
  • Direct, develop, supervise, and provide technical guidance to direct reports
  • Establish and execute operational plans for staffing, workload planning, tools, resources, and technical skill development
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, procedures, and quality control practices
  • Function as Project Manager, Lead Structural Engineer, Structural Engineer of Record, and/or Senior Engineer on projects
  • Prepare or supervise engineering proposals, scopes of work, schedules, and cost estimates
  • Prepare, review, and check structural calculations, designs, drawings, models, specifications, and project documents
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, design guides, specifications, calculation templates, and design references
  • Support recruiting and training efforts across Orbital offices
  • Ensure department and project activities comply with Orbital’s Project Management system
  • Lead projects of varying durations while balancing long-term planning and expedited turnaround
  • Perform occasional field engineering, client meetings, business development travel, and travel to Orbital offices or project sites

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline with a structural emphasis
  • PE license is required
  • Minimum of ten years of prior relevant engineering experience
  • Experience with heavy industrial environments and marketplaces preferred
  • Technical knowledge and/or expertise in structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, foundations, pipe supports, equipment supports, platforms, access structures, industrial buildings, and applicable structural design codes and standards
  • Experience managing engineering teams and/or engineering departments, preferably in a consulting engineering environment
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills with clients and engineering personnel
  • Thorough understanding and aptitude in current computer software, including business enterprise and project management tools, structural analysis, design, drafting, and document review tools
  • Project management training and/or PMP preferred
  • Project management experience and understanding/use of project management and project control principles/tools preferred
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as STAAD, RAM, RISA, Tekla Tedds, Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar tools preferred
