Key responsibilities & impact

Direct, lead, and mentor the accounting team
Establish operational performance metrics, cross-training initiatives, and succession plans
Oversee workflow management, task delegation, and staff development
Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial close activities
Lead technical accounting research under GASB and U.S. GAAP
Supervise preparation of financial statements, MD&A, and footnote disclosures
Design and maintain internal controls, risk control matrices, and financial policies
Oversee state and federal regulatory compliance and UBIT tax compliance
Liaise with external auditors, Virginia audit agencies, and federal oversight bodies
Prepare financial analysis, reports, and recommendations for leadership and board members
Optimize accounting processes, workflows, chart of accounts, ERP, and reporting systems
Author and enforce SOPs, desk manuals, and financial policies
Improve accounting workflows and reduce close-cycle times
Align procure-to-pay processes with accounting, purchasing, accounts payable, and vendor management
Ensure compliance with public-sector and higher-education procurement regulations

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related business discipline
Minimum 5+ years of financial accounting/leadership experience within a health system, hospital, or academic medical center
Minimum 3–5 years of direct supervisory or people-management experience leading accounting teams
Hands-on experience with Oracle PeopleSoft Financials
Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP and/or GASB frameworks
Experience with financial close cycles, complex ledger reconciliations, and internal control frameworks
Experience with tax compliance for nonprofit or public institutions, including UBIT
Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, consensus-building, and executive communication skills
Active Virginia CPA license or reciprocal U.S. jurisdiction license with capability to obtain Virginia licensure is highly preferred
Preferred: Master’s degree in Accounting, MBA, or Master of Science in Finance
Preferred: Workday Financials, Adaptive Planning, Qlik/Power BI, Big 4 or public accounting audit/advisory experience
Preferred certifications: CMA, CGFM, CGAP, or CIA
Understanding of procure-to-pay lifecycle
Familiarity with VPPA, eVA, and OMB Uniform Guidance procurement requirements
