About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage and oversee litigation and other disputes, directly or through external counsel
- Provide strategic legal advice on litigation, privacy, human resources, employment, business, and regulatory matters
- Represent OLG before courts and tribunals as assigned
- Identify and recommend strategies, controls, and measures to mitigate legal and business risk
- Advise senior leaders and functional units on actual or potential litigation and legal risks
- Monitor and improve the litigation management program
- Liaise with the Provincial Government, tribunal bodies, external litigation counsel, and other government stakeholders
- Represent OLG in negotiations and stakeholder meetings
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for legal compliance
- Mentor Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Counsel, Articling Students, Summer Students, and Executive Assistants
- Manage and monitor legal expenses
- Conduct training sessions on relevant legal developments
- Conduct or oversee workplace investigations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Minimum 8 years of progressively senior legal experience in litigation
- Experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal environment within a public or private sector organization
- Experience providing legal advice and strategic counsel to senior leaders on complex legal, business, and regulatory matters
- Experience conducting workplace investigations and advising on employment-related matters
- Experience interpreting and advising on privacy legislation, including FIPPA, considered an asset
- Advanced advocacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
- Strong legal research, analysis, and drafting skills
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Ability to manage complex legal files independently
- Strong problem-solving, strategic-thinking, and decision-making capabilities
- Strong relationship management skills
- Strong knowledge of privacy legislation and regulatory requirements, including FIPPA
- Strategic, business-focused approach to complex challenges
