About the role

  • Enhance mission-critical digital services for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Build and maintain scalable backend services using Ruby on Rails.
  • Implement and maintain background job processing with Sidekiq and caching/queue handling with Redis.
  • Design and optimize PostgreSQL schema and queries and tune database performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues to improve system reliability and uptime.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and across teams, communicating technical and non-technical information.
  • Work in Agile development environments and perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Extensive expertise in Rails for building and maintaining scalable backend services.
  • Deep experience with Sidekiq for background job processing and Redis for caching and queue handling.
  • Strong ability in PostgreSQL schema design, query optimization, and database performance tuning.
  • Proven track record diagnosing and resolving production issues to improve system reliability and uptime.
  • Familiarity with the VA ecosystem—especially VA Platform One, enterprise GitHub practices, VA.gov standards, or DevSecOps models is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage dependencies, and deliver in complex environments.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.
