About the role

  • Define a project, develop a set of tasks to accomplish the project, coordinate and monitor the work required, and deliver a final product on time and within prescribed budget
  • Responsible for quality of work performed, managing project scope, client service, client maintenance, utilization of staff, reputation of the office, contract management, billing collection and project profitability
  • Prepare project proposals for review by an Associate or Principal and may participate in presenting the proposal to the client
  • Participate in selecting internal and external project team; determine major project design decisions with client and project team; assign duties to project team, answer questions; monitor their progress; and check accuracy of completed work
  • Maintain close relationship with the client throughout development of the project; approve all changes to contract documents after completion of the design phase; help collect fees and maintain client contact after project completion
  • Coordinate with client and project stakeholders to prepare scopes of services and fee proposals
  • Provide scheduling, budgeting, design scope, quality control and supervision of Project Engineers, Design Engineers and Engineering Technicians
  • Review scope of services and develop task list and schedule; work with client to obtain payment for work outside contracted scope
  • Review invoices and send to Accounting; spot check Client Status Reports
  • Prepare written work requests and requests for proposals for subconsultants; manage schedule and flow of information among design team and subconsultants
  • Review information from subconsultants for completeness and accuracy; check calculations where possible
  • Coordinate research of county records and other public sources to obtain project data
  • Review and approve preliminary and final design drawings; identify potential design problems and coordinate solutions
  • Attend and run project meetings with clients and local approving agencies; assist in coordination and expedition of review and approval process
  • Maintain regular contact with clients to ensure client satisfaction; backcheck comments and provide final review prior to submittal
  • Use corporate programs and check sheets for quality control on each project; respond to construction-related problems and coordinate with corporate management
  • Mentor and provide direct hands-on assistance to employees under supervision; assist in review of time sheets
  • Review schedule and status of budget weekly; prepare weekly schedule for Design Engineers and Engineering Technicians; provide accurate accounting of time weekly
  • Track key performance elements and report to Supervisor; provide business development through community participation
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of engineering roles; perform other duties assigned by Principal or Associate; travel periodically to project meetings and construction sites

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience; 5 years’ experience preferred
  • Licensed to practice Civil Engineering, and ability to obtain licensing in additional states
  • Experience and success preparing design calculations and design documents (plans and specifications)
  • Ability to delegate tasks to others
  • Ability to design all components of a project
  • Ability to manage projects from inception to completion
  • Aptitude to lead others in design of a project and ensure project completeness
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage use of time both personally and other team members
  • Ability to prepare calculations and reports that clearly express project requirements
  • Proficient with civil design software including AutoCAD, Civil3D and stormwater design programs
  • Proficient using spreadsheets, word processing, and standard office software
  • Excellent planning and organization skills
  • Strong verbal communications and technical writing skills
  • Proven ability to communicate with internal and external project team members, various stakeholders including clients, jurisdictional and utility authorities, and members of the community
