About the role

  • Optical fiber telecommunications contribute to change our socio-economic landscape, by allowing interconnectivity among individuals and/or organizations on the global scale.
  • To support these requirements, optical fiber systems are constantly being expanded and upgraded.
  • Bell Labs hosts a world-class optical transmission lab, with a longstanding history of pioneering hero experiments in the past 20 years, which are widely recognized by the research community.
  • Upcoming systems in the field of optical communications are expected to address different needs spreading over various market segments.
  • Their development associated with a refined modeling of the networks requires a system design that draws on information and communication theory.
  • For reliable and high-speed communications, an important and remarkable development has been the advent of channel coding techniques based on large-scale probabilistic models.
  • Modern coding and signal processing permit to operate close to Shannon’s theoretical limits while keeping low computational complexity.
  • New types of fibers are also emerging to support the demand for higher capacity.
  • As an intern at Bell Labs “optics” you will get familiar with state-of-the-art research on advanced optical systems/DSP and take part to the development of next-gen optical communications.
  • You will acquire an operational understanding of optical technologies and communications.
  • You will be asked to work on high-speed system experiments through lab automation and advanced DSP.
  • This work covers both software and hardware developments.

Requirements

  • You have interest in one or more of the following topics:
  • - Lab automation
  • - Physics and experiments
  • - Algorithms and signal processing
  • - Information and coding theory
  • You also have:
  • - Experimental skills to work in a lab environment
  • - Ability to program in Matlab (modeling, DSP) and python (lab automation).
  • - Working towards a BSc or MSc degree from an Electrical and Computer Engineering / Telecom / Physics school
  • - A background in communication theory and/or applied physics (optics)
  • - Strong written and spoken communications skills and the ability to participate in robust discussions in English.
Benefits
  • If significant results are obtained, the student is encouraged and supported by Bell Labs researchers to publish his work in leading conferences of optical communications.
  • We have regular PhD positions that are normally filled by former interns.
