About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Counsel students on academic, career, and personal matters for the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions
  • Advise current and prospective students regarding matriculation, registration, and goal-setting
  • Attend recruitment, orientation, and admissions events
  • Lead the New Student Seminar
  • Provide advisement support to several programs according to department needs
  • Respond to inquiries concerning the School, department, and program offerings
  • Liaise with Steinhardt Student Affairs on matters impacting student retention and timely graduation, including leaves of absence and withdrawals

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Counseling
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience, including academic advisement, recruitment, admissions, counseling and referrals, or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of New York State higher education laws and policies
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, public speaking, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to plan and deliver special events and seminars
  • Ability to use Peoplesoft to advise students, input program and plan information, track students, and develop and run reports
  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or Student Personnel Administration (preferred)
  • Background in music or another performing arts discipline (preferred)
