About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Greet patients professionally and use triage guidelines to alert clinical team members of urgent situations
  • Follow EMTALA guidelines and the Code Triage Process in the Emergency Department
  • Register and dismiss patients courteously and promptly
  • Create and maintain accurate patient records with demographic, financial and visit information
  • Perform quick registration and collect patient identification information
  • Notify triage clinical team members of patient arrival and chief complaint
  • Coordinate with clinical staff to complete bedside registration after patient stabilization
  • Collect and update demographic information and photo IDs in electronic registration records
  • Verify insurance eligibility and payer information using electronic work queues
  • Scan insurance cards and complete Medicare Secondary Payer questionnaires and payer-specific documents
  • Review and sign admission paperwork with patients or representatives
  • Use translation services as needed
  • Provide copies of signed documents and financial liability documents
  • Explain financial responsibility, estimates and liability waivers
  • Attempt, document and securely process co-pay and other point-of-service collections
  • Notify supervisors of cash discrepancies
  • Refer patients to Patient Financial Counselors when appropriate
  • De-escalate anxious, agitated or upset patients and family members
  • Provide customer service consistent with the organization's mission and vision

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) or equivalent preferred
  • Previous health care registration, customer service, insurance or billing experience required
  • Medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to provide transportation to other campus locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred
  • Knowledge of phone etiquette and some medical terminology
  • Strong computer skills; ability to open and navigate Outlook, Word and Excel attachments, and use a scanner and copier
  • Basic mathematics skills for collecting payments
  • Ability to work independently and collect required patient data for system entry
  • Ability to multitask with strong attention to registration details
  • Ability to relate to patients and coworkers in a kind, courteous and helpful manner
  • Ability to deal with people in crisis situations
  • Ability to transport/escort patients and guests/family members via stairs, elevators or ramps
  • Ability to communicate through a glass barrier
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force
  • Ability to perform required physical activities, including standing, walking, lifting, keyboarding/typing, reaching, repetitive motions, sitting, speaking/talking, hearing and seeing
  • Ability to work around biological agents and physical hazards associated with patient contact
