About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct physical exams and comprehensive medical and social histories
- Make independent decisions regarding management and treatment of medical problems
- Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests
- Prescribe and order appropriate diets, medications, physical therapy, and other treatments
- Perform therapeutic or corrective measures, including urgent care
- Refer individuals to appropriate specialists and healthcare providers
- Provide and evaluate health maintenance, promotion, prevention, illness management, and medication-use counseling
- Initiate and maintain follow-up of noncompliant patients
- Serve as preceptor for medical, nursing, NP, or PA students
- Consult with healthcare providers regarding established clients in hospitals, home care, rehabilitation, or nursing homes
- Correspond with insurers, employers, government agencies, and healthcare providers as necessary
- Manage client care, develop treatment and follow-up plans, monitor progress, arrange referrals, and determine need for hospital or emergency care
- Assess clients’ social and economic factors and tailor care accordingly
- Connect clients with appropriate community resources
- Contract with clients regarding provider and client responsibilities
- Maintain productivity levels to meet facility goals
- Make home visits and provide care in the home as necessary
- Accept and handle after-hours calls and problems on a rotating schedule
- Participate in research, health education, clinical guideline development, community programs, and health fairs
- Obtain informed consent as appropriate
- Represent the practice or profession before governing bodies, agencies, and businesses as needed
- Supervise and teach registered nurses and non-licensed healthcare workers as needed
