About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead student-centred English classes for a diverse clientele of adult learners.
- Planning learning objectives and lesson plans based on students’ needs and level.
- Responsible for planning and delivering practical, engaging English lessons.
- Creating a welcoming and encouraging class environment.
- Assessing and evaluating student progress.
- Maintaining attendance records and other administrative duties as required.
- Working with the business manager to plan and develop lesson content for special projects.
- Providing substitute teacher relief for Engage instructors as availability permits.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Working knowledge of language programming issues for adults;
- Working knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks
- Bachelor’s Degree and TESL Canada recognized certificate or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- At least 2 years' experience in ESL instruction within language schools, settlement, and/or community based English programs;
- Developing curriculum materials and instructing ESL to adults;
- Experience in working with individuals from a diverse background;
- Experience teaching for IELTS and/or CELPIP preparation and/or experience teaching lower levels.
- Deliver student-centered lessons consistent with the program mandate using the CLB to inform planning
- Use current and appropriate technology and tools to support students’ language learning and/or real-life skills
- Facilitate English language learner involvement in the community by incorporating local community resources and materials in lessons, and by creating assignments that encourage learners to interact in real-world situations
- Sensitive to and understanding of the needs of adult language learners and refer students to appropriate resources in response to students' needs
- Maintain and provide statistics on participant progress in the format prescribed department procedures
- Highly organized, tactful, patient and flexible with excellent communication skills
