About the role
- Own core power systems math and models: AC power flow, transient/dynamic analysis, Jacobians, eigenvectors, differential equations
- Design and implement a custom power flow engine and related calculations (speed and/or nuanced accuracy as competitive moat)
- Validate modeling approaches, catch mistakes, and guide implementation details in real time
- Focus on low-inertia, renewable-heavy grids: voltage/frequency stability, control, protection, transient behavior
- Design and validate the dynamic behavior of large loads and IBR.
- Bridge legacy methods and new approaches: respect physics/math, innovate on implementation for performance and scalability
- Collaborate with advisors/consultants
- Provide full-time velocity and technical leadership
- Partner with the engineering team to integrate models into the product, support the MVP and beyond
Requirements
- 5+ years of Power Systems Engineering experience
- PhD in Power Systems Engineering from a top program
- Experience with low inertia power systems (wind, solar, batteries vs traditional spinning turbines)
- Research background in renewable energy integration, distribution/transmission grid
- Deep understanding of voltage/frequency stability, transient analysis, harmonics & control systems
- Familiarity with the interconnection process, standards, and grid codes.
- Fluency in power systems math (Jacobian matrices, eigenvectors, differential equations)
- AC power flows and transient analysis knowledge
- Must “eat, sleep and breathe” mathematical foundations
- Expert knowledge with at least one of these software: PSS/E, Power Factory, PSLF
- RTDS expertise is a plus
- Has a relevant list of publications
